Framed: Drawings in Motion investigates the variety of approaches to animated drawing in contemporary art. This film program, curated by The Drawing Center’s Joanna Kleinberg and Rachel Liebowitz, features recent work from a selection of internationally recognized mid-career and emerging artists. Hand-drawn images are the foundation of all included works — some artists play directly with the medium of drawing as both technique and the material object, while others use a more whimsical approach, creating imaginative narratives alongside attending visuals. In all the films, the artists explore the relationship between our surroundings, human culture, and identity, ranging from quick gestures to more elaborate, descriptive narratives. Projected on a storefront in historic SoHo, Framed: Drawings in Motion’s fleeting moments invite passersby to pause in their busy days. Handcrafted, frame-by-frame animations bring viewers into another dimension of time, to slow down and engage with the work. Artists include: Brent Green, Susi Jirkuff, Kakyoung Lee, Tala Madani, and Raymond Pettibon.
