Lisa Kirk

Lisa Kirk (b. 1967, Newport, RI) is known for paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations that investigate the moral complexities of consumerism, collective fear and trauma, and radical politics. She has described her works as having a visual vocabulary referencing “war, popular entertainment, middle-class American violence, and a sentiment of nostalgia for revolt.” The artist acknowledges that her projects’ materials and processes are frequently dissimilar, yet they are united by their exploration of the human condition. Although her work is exhibited in the form of seemingly “real life” installations, her practice often includes a performative element; in one instance, Kirk was present during an exhibition to offer aura readings and custom elixirs.

Her work has been exhibited widely in group and solo shows, including MoMA PS1, the Electronic Arts Festival at Governors Island, SVA Gallery, Performa Biennial 09, Exile, Berlin and Invisible-Exports, New York. She has received a range of grants from Outpost Artist Resources, The Foundation For Contemporary Art, and Long Beach Museum.  Kirk received an M.F.A. from The University of California, Irvine and a B.F.A. from The School of Visual Arts, NYC. Kirk currently lives and works in the Hudson Valley.
